Animo UST!

I've got some tickets for today's Sunday match-up: UST vs. DLSU. I was able to grab those last minute tickets for the Upper B section. Syempre, gusto ko talaga na nasa Upper A kaya lang sold-out na. I'm really thankful that I one of my friend was able to buy us some tickets...those tickets were really a scarce resource if you'll explain it in terms of Economics language.

Anyways, Medz and I planned to see each other at the entrance of the coliseum in front of the upper box sign. Late pa nga ako dumating kasi medyo nagkaroon ng slight problem..dapat 12:30pm yung usapan para at least makakaupo kami doon sa first row ng upper B...take note..2:00pm yung start.

When I arrived at Araneta Coliseum, super daming tao...may mga naka-green, naka-yellow, naka-blue and naka-yellow and green combination. (2nd game is Ateneo vs. FEU). Hindi ko talaga makita si Medz sa super daming people...Nakita ko pa si Sir Mattias na may konting line of yellow dun sa white t-shirt niya. At least his showing some support to the tigers even though his really allergic to yellow!

As I continued my search until I was losing hope to see Medz..I called her up nalang...It's getting late na rin kasi..baka wala na kaming maupuan. Here's how our conversation goes:

Marielle: Medz..nasan ka na ba? Dito na ako sa may entrance..
Medz: Dito sa harap ng Upper Box
Marielle: Diba Upper box, Patron/Lower Box and Upper Box ulit..dun ako sa may left part.
Medz: Stripes na blue and red (Naman...nde kasi nagyellow eh!..hehe)

Nakakainis talaga..were on the same spot...but still really different.

We were able to grab those cute sponge shaped fingers which is sponsored by Samsung. Ang weird nga eh kasi even though naka yellow ako..pilit akong binibigyan. Since it's cute I get one..tinakpan ko nalang yung akin ng bandana na may nakasulta na UST tigers which is sponsored naman by Accenture. This is how it looks like:

Since I don't want to raise those cute sponges with DLSU sign for the "GO USTe" cheer, I became creative and I've got a funny result.

At the start of the game, ang galing talaga ng UST..nalamangan pa nila ang DLSU ng 17 points for the 1st and 2nd quarter. I'd like to give credit to Dylan (hey I'm not biased hah!) because super galing niya talaga. 3 points shooter na siya..Kahit noong mga past games ng UST pag nanonood lang ako sa TV lagi nilang sinasabi na talagan nag-improve sina Dylan and Francis Allera compared to last season..they make the team stronger!

And then medyo nagkaproblem na sa 3rd and 4th quarter..paliit nalang ng paliit yung lamang ng UST..10 points, 5 points, 3 points, 1 point and then tie-braker at the end of the 4th quarter which brings us to an overtime! Actually nung bago mag-end ang 4th quarter meron pang 6 seconds yung UST para magshoot..kaya lang medyo nagkagulo yung mga players kasi pressured na rin sila that time. I think even coach pido wasn't able to tell the team a good game plan para sure win na UST. At the end, I just saw from my place that Japs Cuan forced a 3 point shot just at the nick of time.

Isa pang comment: LUTO yung game. You know what I mean? Madaya yung isang referee dun. I think slight touch lang yun eh..considered as foul na agad. Kaya maraming free throw shot opportunities yung kabilang team kaya naging tie yung scores. And then pag naman super obvious na na-foul ang UST..hindi kinoconsider nung referee. It's not really fair. It's my first time to watch such game like that na almost every move they call a foul. Haaay..I have a feeling that DLSU might be playing a dirty game..I'm not sure..but that's what is shows.

Even at the overtime..ganun parin yung way ng game. Hanggang sa naging confident na yung DLSU na they could win the game. The result was 90-86.

Even though we lost..I don't feel like a loser. Kasi alam ko talaga sa self ko and pati na rin dun sa ibang kasama ko na nanood (even my Mom who watched the game on TV) that UST was the "real" winner. That's the true spirit of a true thomasian supporter! (.^__^.)

With all the dirty tricks and games that I've seen (it's quite obvious, you know!) and all the cheer and yells that all those yellow-shirt people had shared..(which includes me and my friends of course!) It's alright if we lose now..at least we have a 3-3 run against other teams. May 2nd round pa naman eh..pwede pa bumawi! (.^__^.) Go Tigers!

This day is one of those which I can call Adventure! If you have read some of my past blog entries, you’ll understand what I meant about Adventure..(.^__^.)
Let me share to you my experience together with one of my friends.

After our usual tiresome class which includes the boring subject and professor for Economics and pressuring Rizal subject with professor Roda, me and my friends deserve a break! After we have eaten our meals and do our visit (or duty ) in the orgroom, me and Medz decided to go to the UST library in order to check our eleap account to finish our NSTP assignments and check for any unread modules. Hindi muna namin kasama si Dane kasi nagpunta pa siya sa UST Health Service because she’s not feeling well that time. So, while we’re having usual kwentuhan while walking, I noticed that familiar tall figure with a haircut similar to that of a varsity player. At first, hindi ko muna sinabi kay Medz kasi baka guni-guni ko lang yun..but as we get closer to that figure, I knew what I should do.

Medz: “Asan Marielle!!” (halatang excited din)
Mar: “Ayun oh… just look straight ahead!”
Medz: “Bilisan mo..bilis…habulin natin!”
Mar: “Wait lang…nahihiya ako..wait, slow down! Medz! Ang daming tao” (haii naku..eto na naman..shy time..)
Medz: “Naku..ngayon na! Bilisan mo…i-goodluck natin para sa game nila bukas!”

**Actually plan ko na yan since nung nakita ko siya dun sa may corridor papuntang library. Si medz talaga! She can read my mind. (.^__^.)
While we’re on a walkathon (kakahiya kasing tumakbo ng naka-uniform..ei! take note hindi na ako naka-heels!yey!) meron kaming nakasalubong na group of Engineering girls. For sure, nadaanan sila ni Dylan kasi nung nakita ko yung face nila, it’s as if nakakita sila ng artista. =)

Super madiskarte talaga yung kasama ko kasi ang dami niyang plans in a way na magkakasalubong kami ng paths ni Dylan na hindi niya mahahalatang nasa likod lang niya kami. Kaya lang medyo nagkaroon ng problem ng biglang magturn right siya and pumasok sa loob ng
Botanical Garden. Eh that time, 100% sure kami na papunta siya sa gym for the practice kasi dala niya yung big yellow backpack niya.

Saan kaya yun papunta..for sure sa gym!
Medz: “Oo..for sure sa gym yun!”
Mar: “Sure ka…?”
Medz: “Ai naku Marielle?

Talagang nagvisit muna siya and nagpray before the practice. He’s certainly a good boy talaga!
So nung medyo malapit na kami, and the coast was a bit clear, I composed myself and:

Mar: “Hi Dylan!”
Dylan: “Ui..hello!” (ayan na naman yung happy approach niya!)
** Shocks..wala na akong masabi..uhhmm..**
Mar: “Goodluck pala sa game niyo tomorrow!”
Dylan: “Thank you hah!”
Mar: “Manonood nga kami ng friend ko bukas to give support for the team.”
Dylan: “Talaga? Thank You talaga, sobra!”

Wow! Na-realize ko..tagal na din nung last time na magkaroon ng short conversation with Dylan. I think last sem pa…lagi kasing Hi or smile lang pag nagkakasalubong kami. Nakakamiss din pala! Ang bait kasi talaga niya..you’ll never have doubts or second thoughts na kausapin siya..plus there’s no malice or whatsoever na involved.

Perhaps, this is the sign para bumili ka na ng new pair.
Thanks Medz! (.^__^.)
I still have a bit of a grudge about this day, but at least the results are all out. The victory of UST against NU is one of those games where I can be proud of. They really did their best part and all players must be given credit for all their hardworks and perseverance. Here is the story:

UST defeated NU, wins third straight
July 26, 2007
UST Growling Tigers enjoyed their third consecutive win in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) senior men’s basketball tournament, after they beat National University (NU) Bulldogs, 83-72, before the crowd at the Araneta Coliseum last July 26.

Forward Dylan Ababou was the highest pointer Tiger, registering 18 points, scoring 3 out of 4 from the 3-point stripe.

The first two quarters were a close fight, ending the 1st half with 34-31, but the UST, however, made a big run by shooting baskets from Ababou, Japs Cuan and Jervy Cruz, creating a 53-48 advantage with four minutes down in the third quarter..
NU, however, opened the 4th quarter by shooting hoops and locking the score 57-all. Khasim Mirza and Ababou broke the tie with a big jumper and a three point, respectively, 77-68, with three minutes left in the ball game.

Bulldog Edwin Asoro’s fast-breaks and free throws cut the Tigers’ lead to just five, 77-72, with less than 2 minutes left in the clock.

NU was stuck to their score on their dismay, and UST’s score finally drifted away with Mark Canlas’ jumper shot and Cruz’ open lay-up, ending the game with 83-72.

UST now has a 3-2 win-loss record.
UST will be battling the De Lasalle Green Archers on Sunday, July 29, at the Araneta Coliseum. UST-83: Ababou: 18, Cuan:12, Espiritu:10 Cortez:10, Mirza:9, Canlas:9, Taylor:7, Cruz: 6, Allera:2, Gile:0, Dizon:0
NU – 72: Fernandez: 27, Aguilar: 10 Asoro: 10, Lingao-Lingao: 8, Ponferrada: 7, Jahnke: 4, Garcia:2, Salvado:2, Catamora: 2, Terso: 0, Baloran: 2, Luy, 0, Malagueno: 0

**Biglang umingay nga yung buong house ng ngstart yung game ng 2pm. I don't care if loud screams or even screeches monopolize our roof...as long as the game heat is on..it's Go USTe support time! Medyo nakakatawa nga yung mga pinagsisigaw ko kanina eh..it's as if the players can hear me, especially when they commit faulty or dumb errors.
It's like: "Ano ba yan dapat 3 points na yun eh..!" or
"Oooh..foul yun ah?! Ooops..travelling..yey! turn-over!" hehehe...it's a bit funny in real life than in script.
Second game is the "much awaited" fame of the season for the 1st round, DLSU vs. ADMU. I wasn't able to watch this game on tv because me and my Mom watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on wide screen.
The movie was nice and the actresses and actors especially Daniel Radcliffe was gorgeous. Emma Watson was really pretty and those two who took the role of the Weasley Twins, Fred and George were so handsome! (.^__^.)
As what I've said earlier, the movie was good...but not that excellent. As usual, kulang yung scenes sa movie compared to what was written on the book. Syempre, much better kung complete but just imagine the lenght of the movetime. That will surely hurt my back and my butt..(.^__^.)

Hey... I've seen a picture of a sports icon which quite resembles Daniel Radcliffe..hehe..look!
What do you think? Well, that man is Roger Federer! Ooohh..so handsome! Looks so neat and clean!

Anyways, going back to UAAP, Ateneo won over La Salle in an overtime. At first, I wanted DLSU to win but now I’m happy that Ateneo won. DLSU quite played a bit dirty…I just don’t like the way they’re playing now. Most players were “mayabang” in a sense though of course some Ateneans were like that. Pero hindi ko naman nilalahat. Meron akong mga friends and kakilala who are studying there and they’re different from those who I mentioned above.
Congratulations to all Ateneans! Goodluck on the 2nd round.

Way back when I was in my highschool years, my classmates would often asked me:
“Marielle, which one do you prefer to win..Ateneo or La Salle?”
And my reply is: ”Syempre La Salle! Go Archers!”
Now..I have a different answer. Things do really change!
Question: “Which one do you prefer to wi…Ateneo or La Salle?”
Answer: “Syempre UST! Go Tigers!”
We don't have our PE classes for today..it's our free day because our PE instructor sold us some tickets for the UAAP game UST vs. UP last Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. I wasn't able to watch that game because I don't know where the exact venue is and I'm not familiar about it. I might have some problems on my way home after the game so I decided to watch it on tv nalang. We won that game naman (quite expected) so it's alright. Even though the ticket will cause me 50.00, may kapalit naman eh...wala kaming PE class..kaya okei lang din.

So nagdecide kami nina Debbie and Scylla na manood nalang ng PE nila. Medyo mas malawak lang yung gym nila doon kaya lang uncovered...at least yung sa amin we have our protection just in case umulan. And then mas maraming basketball courts yung sa kanila..I think mga 6 or 8..yung sa amin 2 lang.

After the shocking truth that UAAP tickets for this Thursday's game was sold-out..here come's the good news! I've already got the tickets for the next Sunday game on July 29, 2007.
UST vs. DLSU
ADMU vs. FEU
I'm really happy..those tickets are regarded as the last minute tickets in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in UST. Finally I have one..and it's not on the Gen Ad part...Upper B! hehe..I'm lucky today! I'm getting a bit desperate to have that ticket..it's really a scarce resource.

I better get ready for my stuff..yellow shirt and everything! Super miss ko na yung cheer..gosh! Go USTe..

Oh by the way..I just want to share to you some reviews about the past games of UST for this first round..here it is: (.^__^.)

Tigers still half asleep, lose over UE
Sunday, July 8, 2007
University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers didn’t growl quite loud as University of the East Red Warriors beat last season’s champions, 73-60, in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines(UAAP) senior men's basketball competition last July 8, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay.
Jervy Cruz still ended with a 16-point record in the opening game, despite the minor injury he attained in the middle of the game.

The Warriors, led by Mark Borboran, maintained the lead throughout the first three quarters, disappointing the UST crowd.

The Tigers finally stood out to gain control of the game, only to be disappointed by their opponent’s drive for the win. The Recto-based rosters’ score finally drifted away from the Espana boys’ with only a minute remaining in the last quarter.

Earlier, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles defeated Adamson University Falcons, 69-63, in an overtime.

Joining De La Salle University Green Archers and National University Bulldogs top the race, UE and Ateneo now both have a 1-0 slate.
Quarters: 17-14, 33-27, 48-45, 73-60

TAMARAW DOMINATED THE TIGERS
July 14, 2007, Saturday
University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers was slapped with a second defeat after losing against Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, 81-66, in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) senior men's basketball at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last July 14.

The Tamaraws were too eager to bounce back into the league after their bitter defeat against the National University Bulldogs last July 7 that they completely dominated the Tigers, who lost against the University of the East Red Warriors in their first game.

FEU welcomed UST into the match by not allowing the defending champs to score too much, resulting a 16-point lead favoring the Tamaraws, and the Tigers recording only 10 points in the 1st quarter and ending the 1st half, 41-23.

UST tried catching up in the 3rd quarter, even cutting the lead to just 15 points with less than five minutes left. But FEU answered the challenge, closing the 3rd quarter with a 61-43 score.

Tigers Japs Cuan, guard Mark Canlas, and Khazim Mirza, however, got the ball rolling by shooting baskets and stealing balls, cutting FEU’s big lead to just nine points, with less than 4 minutes left in the final quarter.

Jervy Cruz, the highest scorer in the game with 19 points, scored from the free throw line with less than three minutes until the end of the game.

But time was in FEU’s hand as UST was unable to catch with the Morayta-based players, who were still scoring I the game, closing it with a 9-3 run, putting the final score at 81-66.

The Tigers are now tied with Adamson Falcons and University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons who are at the bottom of the standings with 0-2 win-loss records.

FEU :81 - Sanga:15, Adolfo: 15, Cawaling: 11, Gerilla: 8, Barroca: 7, Baracael: 6, Fernandez: 5. Abaring: 3, Reyes:3, Cervantes:3, Ramos:2, Knuttle:2, Cabagnot:2, Alisbo:0, Tanuan:0
UST:66 – Cruz: 19, Mirza:11, Cuan:10, Ababou:8, Canlas:6, Scott:4, Espiritu:3, Allera:3, Dizon:2, Basa:0, Badua:0, Taylor:0, Cortez:0

UST TIGERS ETCH FIRST WIN
July 19, 2007 - Thursday
"More than Jervy Cruz's usual monster game, 24 points and 23 rebounds, it was the team's collective effort and successful adjustment to the sudden exit of Jojo Duncil with new players finally taking charge. Francis Allera was a surprise standout with 26 points and 8 rebounds."

Down for as much as 12 points in the first quarter, the defending champions bounced back with triple three-pointers at the start of the second quarter courtesy of Jun Cortez and a back-to-back from Allera. Leo Canuday and Patrick Cabahug of Adamson were quick to respond with two treys but Allera, along with Anthony Espiritu, carried on the shooting spree behind the arc to keep the Falcons at bay. The Tigers closed the first half with a two-point lead, 47-45.

Three straight stolen possessions maneuvered by Espiritu and a three-pointer fired by unlikely source Japs Cuan in the last canto marked the turning point of the game as the Tigers widened the gap by ten and was pushed even further to 16 points, 94-78, with only less than two minutes on the clock. The Tigers manufactured 31 points in the quarter, so far the highest posted digit within a quarter in the season.

Quarter scores: 18-26, 47-45, 65-64, 96-84

TIGER 2-2 DEFEAT MAROONS
After a 0-2 start, UST Growling Tigers gained their second win as they defeated the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 76-68, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Senior men’s basketball last July 21 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

"Francis Allera once again stepped out and shot hoops for the team as what he did during the Tigers’ victor over the Adamson Falcons, earning the best player of the game title."

First quarter ended with a tie, 15 on both teams, but Espana-based rosters stepped up as they earned an 8-point lead against the Diliman boys in the end of the 1st half.

UST’s score drifter farter away as they closed the 3rd quarter with an eleven-point advantage.

Mighty Tiger Jervy Cruz played a crucial game, especially after Fighting Maroons Woody Co and Veejay Serios cut the Tigers lead – 12 points - to just five points with under a minute left in the 4th quarter.

However, Dylan Ababou, scored one of his two attempts from the charity stripe to lock the score at 76-68.

UST is now tied with the National University Bulldogs, 2-2.
Earlier, Ateneo Blue Eagles won over the Bulldogs in a close fight, 66-65

Quarters: 15-15, 43-35, 62-51, 76-68

I'm just a bit sad today because I wasn't able to buy a ticket for the UAAP game scheduled for Thursday...=(
I really prepared and anticipated for that game days ago for two reasons:
1st game: UST vs. NU
2nd game: Ateneo vs. La Salle

I have a feeling that UST will win on that particular game and that will make them a 3-2 game win and loss against other teams. That will be my first time to watch a game of the tigers live at Araneta Coliseum for this season. I prefer to watch games in Araneta rather than in any other venue so that I don't have any problems on my way home..

Next, ADMU and DLSU is the game of the 1st round of the season. We all know that these 2 universities are tough rivals in terms of quality education and also in sports. Since last season DLSU was suspended, it's their come back season and it will be exciting to see them play for the first time against ADMU at UAAP. They're like Federer and Nadal... =)
Plus I'm also excited to see how their players play like Chris Tiu, Simon Atkins...etc.(.^__^.)

Since last week me and my friends and classmates were planning to watch the game together. Some will be at the patron section while we will be at Upper A box.
I was supposed to go to Araneta Coliseum today to but the tickets but unfortunately, it's sold-out..all sections! Even at UST... no single ticket left..even the General Admission.
(lesson learned from Joan!)
Kaya lang no choice talaga eh..we have classes. And another sad thing is that wala naman kaming masyadong important na ginawa ngayon..lahat discussions lang!! Sayang talaga...

Maybe it wasn't meant to be talaga..I'll try to watch nalang on the 2nd round. Pero..sayang talaga eh. But it's okei parin naman to watch the game on TV..at least I can hear some side comments about the game.
Hmmmm..there will be a game on Sunday: UST vs. DLSU. I want to watch this kaya lang I'm having second thoughts..I don't want kasi to watch the game live and see that UST will lost against a very aggressive team.

Oh! Just think positive! (.^__^.)
It's Sunday and I have classes today..
Because of NSTP/LTS we were required to go to school for the long test scheduled today. I was scheduled at 10:35am upto 10:55am. I didnt reviewed that well, not that confident in answering the today's long test but it's okei. I've read the modules over and over again yesterday so kahit konti siguro may natira namang informations.

I arrived at school super early.

My friend Bea even told me na super punctual daw ako. Hmmmm..I was even surprised that I'm at school that early than our call time.
It's because...there's no TRAFFIC! I wish everyday will be like this morning..**wishes**

Since maaga pa, nakipagkwentuhan muna ako sa mga friends ko..medyo nagkaroon ng slight leakage ng mga questions from the test. And then, after a while dumating na rin si Medz na mas super punctual. 11:20 pa exams niya pero almost sabay pa kami dumating. Ganon siguro talaga pag malayo yung house from the university..you always worry about the traffic.

At 10:35 am, all the examiners were called and nakita ko na rin for the 1st time yung mga classmates ko sa L-COMM-1. Hindi kasi ako umattend ng orientation day namin last 3 weeks ago. They look fine naman...They will be the ones na makakasama ko for the next semester sa pagpunta sa mga communities na tinutulungan ng UST somewhere outside of Manila. Luckily, I have a classmate na classmate ko rin sa Pre-Com.

During the actual online examination..we were allowed to answer the exams for 30 minutes. I finished it for 9 minutes. It's quite easy pero you need to analyze it kasi puro statements. Buti nalang multiple choice yung type of exams. I'm pretty sure that I'll get good grades for that exam. Technology had done a great job talaga..biro mo online examinations na and makikita agad yung results. I even brought with me a pen and pencil...I'm still very low-tech..(.^__^.)

Chasing the greats of tennis, Federer wins 5th straight Wimbledon

5 cheers for Roger Federer!..woohoo! (.^__^.)
Last Sunday, July 8, 2007, Roger Federer won for the 5th consecutive time the Wimbledon Finals match against Rafael Nadal, the second seeded tennis player for this tournament.
Isn’t this good news?
I was really happy because I saw it live - - on TV at Star Sports. I told you, I can’t afford to miss it! Let me share to you my own story during the Federer-Nadal finals game.
Before the match started, I was really both excited and nervous about the play. Excited for the fact that I’ll be seeing Roger Federer again on TV and this time it’s for the most important finals match he’d ever have..a finals match that will run the pages of the history of tennis. Federer is a living legend! (.^__^.) And nervous because he will play against a very good player too...

At around 9:00pm, the match already started, and I prepared myself as well. I fixed myself and sat on my fave sofa..ooops! I haven't eaten my dinner yet..later! And besides, I'm not yet that hungry. That can wait...
As the players were called for the coin toss which will determine who will have the first serve, Federer chose the heads...luckily...the toss revealed the heads and so Federer will be the 1st to serve. 1st sign of luck...

As the 1st set goes on..I was confident that Roger will win it, pero syempre Rafael really played well upto the point na head to head na yung match..One miss and it's all gone! My stomach ached a bit during the last part of the 1st set where the score was tied at 6-6. At the end, Federer won the 1st set.. 7-6 (7)
2nd set: Nadal took it for 4-6.
3rd set: Federer took it 7-6 (3) ...I noticed that Roger really struggled in order to win a set..see.. it's always a tie-breaker game..
4th set: Nadal took it for 2-6. This is the set where Federer lost his concentration because there was this shot of Nadal to his court where it is supposed to be called out but the replay showed that it's in..so they decided to give the point in favor of Nadal. That's not fair, really! It's out...hate that hawkeye!

**Hawkeye refers to the replay shot shown on the monitors in the tournament so that the viewers as well as the players can see it clearly.**

And then, 5th set: it's the DECIDING SET.
In order to win, the player must get 3 sets. Federer and Nadal took both 2 sets...they're fighting for this last set. If you could only see me during that time..I was really screaming...really nervous..standing up and down of my seat. I even told my Mom that if Roger will lose...I'll cry...it's my first time kasi to watch Roger on Wimbledon..and then he'll lose.

But then, God is really good for he gives the reward for those who deserve it and Federer really deserve it! He played not for the credit, nor for the trophy or prize money. He played for the game and for those people who supported him. He won the last set: 6-2 together with the record of 54th straight victory on Grass! Yey! (.^__^.) But I'll give extra credit to Rafael Nadal too..he did a fantastic game..he deserved to have the runner-up place here...

Now let me share to you the story written by sports journalist. Read what they have to say:

Chasing the greats of tennis, Federer wins 5th straight Wimbledon
By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Tennis WriterJuly 8, 2007

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Locked in the toughest test of his Wimbledon reign, against his only real rival in today's game, Roger Federer summoned the strokes and resolve that allow him to chase records set by the greats of yesteryear.

And after Federer finally overcame Rafael Nadal in a five-set epic Sunday to win his fifth consecutive championship at the All England Club and 11th Grand Slam title overall, tying Bjorn Borg on both counts, guess who was waiting to greet him in a hallway off Centre Court? Borg himself.

They smiled and embraced, then chatted briefly, a tete-a-tete between the only two men in the past century to win Wimbledon five years in a row.
"To see him after the match -- it was very fitting in my point of view," Federer said.
"It made me a bit more proud of myself."

He could swell his chest all he wanted, given everything he's accomplished, not to mention the way he beat three-time French Open champion Nadal 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2 for his 54th straight victory on grass in a taut match filled with momentum swings and marvelous shotmaking.

Federer is No. 1, Nadal is No. 2, and they have met in four of the past six major finals. Federer won both at the All England Club. Nadal won both at Roland Garros. This was, by far, the best of the bunch.

"I win my share. He wins his. We've been at the top for over 100 weeks together. It is like building up to one of maybe the great rivalries," Federer said.
"We sometimes haven't lived up to the expectations in the past ... but you can't always play
five-set thrillers, you know. I'm happy it happened today. I left as the winner. Perfect."

He's taken 11 of the past 17 Grand Slam titles, including three apiece at the Australian Open and U.S. Open. Now Federer's total trails only Roy Emerson's 12 and Pete Sampras' 14 on the list of career Grand Slam titles.
"I don't know how much longer I can keep it up," the 25-year-old Federer said, "but I definitely feel like I'm mentally and physically still fit to go on for many more years."

As close as the 21-year-old Nadal is to a barrier -- the Spaniard does lead their career series 8-5, after all -- Federer's main challenge for some time has come from trying to live up to standards set in the past.

Even if Federer doesn't necessarily look at it that way.
"He has so much passion for the game," said his mother, Lynette.
"He's not playing for the record books. He's playing for the game."

On Sunday, on his game's grandest stage, Federer finished with a 24-1 edge in aces and a 65-50 edge in winners. Numbers hardly do justice to his excellence or elegance with a racket in hand, however.
"He's an artist on this surface. He can stay back. He can come in. No weaknesses," said Borg, whose Wimbledon run was from 1976-80.

"I believe if he continues the way he's doing and stays away from injuries and has the motivation, he'll be the greatest player ever to play the game."

And those words were spoken before Borg watched Federer's latest virtuoso performance from the front row in the Royal Box in jacket and tie.

Federer also dressed formally for the occasion, sporting his tailor-made, five-piece Gatsby getup, from the white dinner jacket with the gold "RF" on the left breast pocket to the white slacks replete with belt loops. Even his shoes were special, with four tiny red circles patterned after the Swiss flag, each marking a year he won a Wimbledon title. A fifth circle needs to be added now.

Still, just when it looked as if Federer might turn the sunny afternoon into a coronation by taking a 3-0 lead, Nadal won the next three games. Just when it looked as if Nadal might be in charge, breezing through the fourth set, Federer broke twice in a row to end the match.

Each did what he does best -- and managed to show a flair for his foe's fortes.
Nadal is terrific at the baseline, forcing opponents to hit great groundstroke after great groundstroke just to win a single point. Yet there was Federer, hanging in there on the longest of rallies; he won half the points that lasted at least 10 strokes. Federer believes he's the best server around, yet it was Nadal who kept producing easy hold after easy hold.

"I tried to play as aggressive as possible," Nadal said.
In the first set, he played serve-and-volley on one point, as if to say,
"See, I can do that, too." And Federer conjured up a cross-court forehand passing shot on the run, as if to reply, "Yeah, well, I can do THAT, too."
Because of all the rain that jumbled the schedule and sapped some of the tournament's energy, Nadal was playing on a seventh consecutive day. His right knee was treated during the fourth set, but he said that wasn't a factor.
"Tired? No, no. Not tired," said Nadal's uncle and coach, Toni.
"He played the first four sets completely even. Even."

Federer has won 34 matches in a row at Wimbledon, and this was the first to go five sets. He's played in 13 Grand Slam finals, and this was the first to go five sets.
And he was growing frustrated, both by Nadal's relentless play and by what appeared, to Federer, to be questionable rulings by the instant replay system making its Wimbledon debut. After one call in Nadal's favor, Federer cursed in disbelief.

"It's killing me today," Federer told the chair umpire.
Nadal had his chances in the final set. At 1-1, 15-40, he held two break points, but pushed a return long, then missed a forehand wide. At 2-2, 15-40, Nadal sent a return long, then Federer produced a 127 mph service winner.
"It was a tough moment to be in," Federer said. "I was nervous."

Those dangers averted, ahead 3-2 in the fifth, Federer grabbed hold of the match, getting to love-40 on Nadal's serve. Finally, more than three full sets after the last time he had broken, Federer came through, ending a 14-stroke exchange with a forehand winner that kicked up a cloud of chalk.
Federer hit three aces in the next game to hold, then broke Nadal again. When he converted his second match point with an overhead winner, Federer dropped to his knees -- the way Borg used to celebrate.
Waiting for the trophy ceremony, Nadal slumped forward in his chair, hanging his head.
"Losing in the fifth set," Nadal said later. "It's not easy, no?"

ATP - THE DREAM COMES TRUE!Roger emulated the legendary Björn Borg when he captured his fifth successive Wimbledon title with a 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6 and 6-2 win over Rafael Nadal in a thrilling final today.

It was Roger’s 11th career Grand Slam title, taking him within three of Pete Sampras's record of 14 and was his 54th consecutive grasscourt win.

"Each win is special but to play a champion like Rafa and equalling Björn's record it makes it very special," said Roger who was later warmly embraced by the man whose Wimbledon record he'd just equalled.

He added: "Rafa is a fantastic player who will be around longer than me so I'm happy to win again before he takes them all. It was a close match and I told Rafa at the net that he deserved it as well. Today I was the lucky one."

"Roger has had an amazing season and to win five Wimbledons in a row is fantastic," said Nadal, the triple French Open winner. Roger said: "I was drained mentally and physically. It was a huge occasion, the record was on the line... It just adds up and puts more pressure on you."

"To have Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Boris Becker sitting there watching... I will take very special memories of this final."http://rogerfederer.com

Today, 2 very important games will happen:

1st: UAAP Season 70 match UST vs. UE.
It's the first game of UST for this new season and it just so happen that they'll try to win against UE, a very competitive team. Since UST lost 2 of it's key players, Jojo Duncil and Alan Evangelista because of age issues..the team this year will try to defend it's title against 7 university rivals, including DLSU this year. It will be a tough season talaga..especially that UST will defend it's title and at the same time the host school..it puts a lot of pressure for the varsity players, I suppose. Game will start at 4:00pm which will be held at the Cuneta Astrodome. Siguro kung sa Araneta Coliseum or sa Ultra, okei lang..but in Cuneta Astrodome..never mind! I'll just watch over the television..there will be a much clearer view. I'm really excited to watch this game..finally I can see Dylan on TV. (as if naman nagsawa na akong makita siya personally..hehe)
Go USTe..Go Dylan! (.^__^.)
2nd: Wimbledon Finals: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
This will be a very good match to watch, can't afford to miss it. Again Roger Federer's nemesis Rafael Nadal will try to win the Wimbledon title for the 2nd time. But for Roger Federer's part..it will be his 5th consecutive win on Wimbledon if ever he'll win. Of course he'll win..I'm really praying for that. Everytime they're playing for the title, I'm having second thoughts if Federer will win..Rafa is really driven to win. Last time at French Open (clay) Rafa won leaving Federer at the runner-up place, but now it will be a different story. RFed will win..I'm sure!

Oh, by the way, another reason why I can't afford to miss this finals match is the opportunity to see Roger playing..he's really awesome! He really looks good..I usually scream for joy whenever I see him..he's good..he soo handsome too! (.^__^.)
Let me share to you the Semi-finals game of Roger Federer vs. Richard Gasquet!

July 7, 2007
ATP - ROGER STILL ON COURSE FOR HISTORY
Roger is just one step away from his fifth Wimbledon title! He will meet Rafael Nadal in tomorrow's men's singles after defeating Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 today.

At first, Gasquet showed no ill-effects of last night's thrilling five-set victory over third seed Andy Roddick. Seeking to keep alive his bid for a record-equalling fifth straight title, Roger had to save three break points to keep his nose in front in bright sunshine on Centre Court. But our star raised his game when it mattered most to break Gasquet in the 12th game of the set to take it 7-5.
Watched by Bjorn Borg, the man whose record he is aiming to equal, Roger clearly took heart from that hard-fought success and it began to look ominous for his 21-year-old opponent, making his debut in a grand slam semi-final.

Gasquet had to call for a medical time-out after the second set to receive treatment on his left ankle. It did not appear initially appear to be too serious, especially when he produced a running forehand winner which had Roger raising his eyes skyward in disbelief, but the latter star responded with six aces in his next two service games to remain on level terms at 3-3.

Roger is now more than ready to equal the record of Bjorn Borg and claim his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title.
"Never, ever - and I think the same for him - did we think we were going to win Wimbledon so many times," said Roger of Borg, who was watching from the Royal Box today.

"Now I'm in the position to equal his great record. I saw him sitting there today, thank God only in the second set so I could concentrate on the first set first. It is tricky when you see him sitting there because he is a living legend. It is a boost, but it can also be a negative thing if you put too much pressure on yourself. In the end you've got to block it out, whoever is sitting there. I have so much respect for him that it is great that he's here. I hope I can do the job tomorrow."

Nadal, meanwhile, did not have to fight for his place in the final. Djokovic explained a blister sustained during his win over Baghdatis had become infected, and painful enough to make him seriously consider whether to take to the court at all.

"I didn't sleep during the night because there was a lot of bleeding and I was barely walking this morning," he said. Djokovic was forced to retire at 4-1 down in the third set.

Oh, poor Djokovic..I really want him to win against Nadal. Actually, my next favorite tennis player after Federer is Djokovic..he's soo good to! (.^__^.)
This semi-finals match happened last July 7, 2007.
7-7-7.. It's a lucky day!
